Practical Calibration Procedures for Solar Radiation Instruments in Algeria
Abstract
Reliable measurement of solar irradiance forms the cornerstone of performance evaluation and efficiency optimization in solar energy systems. This work outlines a comprehensive, practical methodology for the calibration of solar irradiance sensors, providing a systematic, step-by-step framework to ensure high-quality solar radiation data. The described approach covers instrument selection criteria, proper installation practices, routine maintenance, and calibration procedures using reference standards (ISO 9847). Specific focus is placed on pyranometer calibration through shading and Unshading methods, zero-offset verification, and sensitivity checks. This practical framework outlines the essential procedures for calibrating pyranometers and pyrheliometers used in solar irradiance measurements in Algeria. The study emphasizes the critical importance of regular calibration of solar radiation instruments, highlighting a sensitivity degradation of pyranometers that can reach approximately 4% per decade in regions characterized by harsh climatic conditions.
